Magnesium: An important Element for a Healthy Body

Wrote by Stephanie Oswald Certified Health Coach (IIN, graduated 2014) and an Registered Holistic Nutritionist.

Magnesium is an essential mineral that functions as a cofactor for over 300 different enzymes in the human body.

It is required for the production of energy in the cell, nervous system function, muscle relaxation, build and maintain strong bones and teeth and helps support the utilization of other nutrients in the body. Magnesium helps the body bring calcium into the bone and activate Vitamin D, which is critical for strong bones and a healthy immune system. Adults need to intake about 100 mg of magnesium every single day. That can be a difficult task through diet alone due to poor dietary choices, soil depletion and the consumption of magnesium drainers like sugar and alcohol.

Magnesium is such an important mineral for healthy muscle function, electrolyte balance and relaxation. Athletes can benefit from taking additional magnesium, as some studies have linked it to improvements in athletic performance, easing muscle pain and cramping associated with exercise and aid in hydration. If you feel anxious or stressed out, magnesium can help calm the nervous system and even helps improve sleep. We know by now that managing stress and having adequate sleep are so critical for overall wellbeing, taking a magnesium supplement and ensuring adequate intake in your diet can help you get the stress reducing, sleep improving benefits of this wonderful mineral. It’s even been shown to help promote a healthy heart by aiding in muscle relaxation and health.

Some of the most common signs of Magnesium deficiency are:

  • Muscle aches and spasm
  • Insomnia
  • Headaches
  • Constipation
  • Low energy

Foods high in Magnesium include:

  • Dark chocolate
  • Spinach
  • Almonds
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Black Beans
  • Avocado
  • Banana
  • Figs

Land Art Magnesium is in ionic form for optimal absorption and utilization in the body. I personally take the Land Art Ionic Magnesium in a super fruit concentrate (which is absolutely delicious) every night before I brush my teeth. I have been a long-term magnesium supplement fan and absolutely love the improvements I have seen in my sleep and muscle aches.
